The Name of the Wind - 2026-07-04
The Name of the Wind is a great fantasy novel by Patrick Rothfuss. I’ve had a really enjoyable read of it and its sequel The Wise Man’s Fear over the last month. It has great prose: the writing is very colorful, both in the narrator’s mouth and during dialogues. I found myself completely forgotting I was reading a novel for the most part. I also found the story building to be masterfully executed. The world is laid out in layers, with very little obvious exposition, and there are many callbacks and foreshadowing.
The way it handles female characters is… often a bit icky. It can be partly explained by the medieval/fantasy setting adopted by most of the story, but I found it uncomfortable at times. Still, there is a large cast of fully fleshed out female characters, which is better than most fantasy novels for sure. I feel like the The Wise Man’s Fear handles female characters and interactions a lot better than the first novel.
The only other problem is that this book inscribes itself in a trilogy… whose third installement is still in the covers, and has been for a dozen years at this point. I’m honestly not very hopeful we’ll get the end of the story any time soon…
But if unfinished stories don’t bother you, I wholeheartedly recommend this book.
